Gospel Mark 1:7-11

7 He preached to the people saying, “After me there will come one who is mightier than I am;
8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. As for me, I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandals.”
9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth, a town of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10 And the moment he came up out of the water, Heaven opened before him and he saw the Spirit coming down on him like a dove.
11 And these words were heard from Heaven, “You are my Son, my beloved one, whom I have chosen.”

7 Ông rao giảng rằng: “Có Đấng quyền thế hơn tôi đang đến sau tôi, tôi không đáng cúi xuống cởi quai dép cho Người.
8 Tôi đã làm phép rửa cho anh em nhờ nước; còn Người, Người sẽ làm phép rửa cho anh em trong Thánh Thần.”
9 Hồi ấy, Đức Giê-su từ Na-da-rét miền Ga-li-lê đến, và được ông Gio-an làm phép rửa dưới sông Gio-đan.
10 Vừa lên khỏi nước, Người liền thấy các tầng trời xé ra, và thấy Thần Khí tựa chim bồ câu ngự xuống trên mình.
11 Lại có tiếng từ trời phán rằng: “Con là Con yêu dấu của Cha, Cha hài lòng về Con.”

Interesting Details

– (v.9) John’s baptism is an outward expression of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Though Jesus is without sins, He too stands in line with the penitents of Israel. Jesus identifies himself with a movement of the people back to God.

– (v.10) “Heaven opened”. The opening of the heavens symbolizes the end of the separation from God and the beginning of communication between heaven and earth (Isa 63:19).

– (v.10) “the Spirit coming down..like a dove”. The image of a dove is used in several ways in the Old Testament. A first-century rabbinic tradition explained the Spirit hovering over the waters at creation(Ge 1:2) with image of a dove. Thus, Jesus’ baptism by the Spirit symbolizes a new creation of the world . In Songs 2:14, a dove symbolizes God’s love for the world.

– (v.11) God’s words echo several quotations from the Old Testament. Psalm 2:7 speaks of the Messiah as ” You are my Son”. In the Servant Song of Isaiah 42:1, He is called ” behold my servant, whom I have chosen, in whom my soul delights”. Thus, Jesus is the Messiah, anointed by the Spirit to rule all nations, the Servant who has been appointed to deliver his people, and the beloved Son of God. God’s words solemnly affirms Jesus’ status and his mission.

– (c.9) Phép rửa bằng nước của thánh Gio-an là cách tỏ lòng sám hối để được ơn tha tội. Tuy Chúa Giê-su không có tội, Người vẫn đứng xếp hàng với những người tội lỗi. Chúa Giê-su hòa mình với đoàn người đang trở về với Thiên Chúa.

– (c.10) “Các tầng trời xé ra” biểu tượng sự giao hòa giữa trời và đất, giữa Thiên Chúa và con người (Is 63:19).

– (c.10)”Thần khí tựa chim bồ câu”. Trong Cựu Ước, chim bồ câu là biểu tượng tình yêu của Thiên Chúa dành cho loài người (Dc 2:14) Ngoài ra, sách Sáng Thế 1:2 viết “Thần khí Thiên Chúa bay lượn trên mặt nước” để tả công cuộc tạo thành. Chúa Giê-su chịu phép rửa là bắt đầu một cuộc tạo thành mới.

– (c.11)Lời của Thiên Chúa đã được nhắc qua trong Cựu Ước. Thánh vịnh 2:7 gọi đấng Mê-sia là “Con là Con của Cha”. Isaia 42:1 viết lời Thiên Chúa “đây là người tôi trung Ta nâng đỡ, đây là Người Ta tuyển chọn”. Như vậy, Chúa Giê-su chính là Đấng Mê-sia, là Người Tôi trung được tuyển chọn để giải thoát nhân loại, và là Con Thiên Chúa. Lời phán từ trời xác nhận địa vị và sứ mệnh của Chúa Giê-su.
